THEATRICAL  LIGHTING  DESIGN

I have 10 years of experience as a theatrical lighting designer for Proximity Theatre Company, an experimental theatre-dance troupe based in Santa Barbara, CA.  While I have no formal training, I did study film lighting at Emerson College where I learned about power distribution and electrical saftey procedures. Over the past 10 years I have designed 10 shows in a wide range of spaces, from state-of-the-art black boxes, to 1,000 seat proscenium theaters, to unconventional performance spaces like art galleries. I tought myself everything I have needed to know to design, hang/focus lights, and program and run boards.

I am interested in helping frame moments with light, using light and color to create spaces and environments, and making empty stages come alive. My background as a film director and cinematographer has tought me about the importance of contrast, how the absence of light can often be even more powerful than its presence, but also how important it is to see the actors' faces. Theatrical storytelling is a human medium that requires the audience to experience an intimacy with the actors that can be hightened with the proper color and light.
